Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This move has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the APC, which has been Malami’s political home.

Malami cited several reasons for his decision to leave the APC, including Governance Failures.

He expressed deep concern over the current administration’s handling of national security, economy, and governance, stating that governance has been abandoned and appointments, projects, and policies are guided by political loyalty rather than national interest.

Malami lamented the worsening state of insecurity, banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism in the country, as well as the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, including tripled prices of basic food items and disappearing jobs.

He criticized the government for prioritizing politics over the safety of its citizens and being consumed by propaganda and political distractions rather than focusing on real solutions.

Malami’s defection is seen as a significant blow to the APC, particularly in Kebbi State, where he holds considerable influence.

His departure may trigger a series of realignments within the party. On the other hand, the ADC has welcomed Malami’s defection, viewing it as a bold step toward national restoration .

The ADC national leadership, including Interim Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, has expressed enthusiasm over Malami’s decision to join their party. Aregbesola stated that Malami’s experience and knowledge will strengthen their legal and policy frameworks as they prepare for a new Nigeria.

There are speculations that Malami may head the coalition’s Legal and Electoral Reform Committee, given his background as a legal expert and former Attorney General.

His inclusion is expected to attract more technocrats and professionals to the party .

Malami’s defection is likely to have significant implications for the 2027 general elections.

His influence in Kebbi State and the broader Northwest geopolitical zone could reshape power dynamics and boost the ADC’s relevance.

The party is positioning itself as a formidable force, attractive to individuals seeking change and reform .

Some notable figures who have joined or are part of the ADC coalition include ³
Atiku Abubakar, Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate.

Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate
