JUST IN: Veteran music icon Femi Lasode dies at 70

Veteran Nigerian music icon, filmmaker, and cultural promoter, Obafemi Lasode, has passed away.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the news of his death was announced on Friday, July 25, 2025, by Dr. Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli, a former President of the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), via a heartfelt social media post.

Lasode, who was born on December 4, 1955, died at the age of 70.

Tee Mac’s post read: “Obafemi Lasode, born 4 December 1955, a Nigerian veteran musician, film director and producer, songwriter, music producer, and playwright, died today. My condolences to all. Respectfully, Dr. Tee Mac.”

Obafemi Lasode was widely respected for his multi-dimensional contributions to Nigeria’s music and film indutries.

He was best known for blending traditional African themes with contemporary music and cinematic techniques, helping to shape the sound and visual identity of Nigerian media for several decades.

His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans, colleagues, and cultural institutions across the country.

Many Nigerians remember Lasode for his visionary work that helped lay the foundation for today’s Nollywood and Afrobeat successes.
