(DDM) – Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has confirmed she will not run for governor of California in 2026.

Her decision ends months of speculation about her potential candidacy but raises new questions about her long-term political future.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Harris made the announcement in a public statement on Wednesday, stating she would not seek elected office for the time being.

“For now, my leadership, and public service, will not be in elected office,” Harris declared.

She added that she plans to reconnect with the American people, assist Democratic candidates, and reveal her own future plans in the coming months.

Harris’s political path has been under close scrutiny following her defeat alongside President Joe Biden in the 2024 election to Donald Trump.

Following that loss, her team had signaled that she would take time to consider her next steps.

Among the possibilities discussed were a run for California governor in 2026 or a return to the presidential campaign trail in 2028.

Had she entered the governor’s race, Harris would have instantly become the frontrunner, due to her national profile and previous statewide roles as Attorney General and U.S. Senator.

Other Democrats still in the running for the governorship include former U.S. Representative Katie Porter, ex-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Xavier Becerra, the former Health and Human Services Secretary.

California remains a Democratic stronghold, and the party is widely expected to retain the governor’s mansion.

However, Harris reportedly faced internal resistance from some California Democrats who questioned her political baggage.

Concerns were raised about the impact of her failed 2020 presidential run and the possibility that her candidacy might harm Democratic chances in competitive House races across the state.

During her deliberation, Harris consulted with former governors of California to assess what she could realistically achieve in the role.

She also commissioned policy research and strategic memos exploring multiple options outside of elected office.

These alternatives include launching a 501(c)(4) advocacy group to address issues like voter education and democratic reforms.

She is also said to be considering the creation of a political action committee (PAC) to support Democratic candidates nationwide.

Additionally, a listening tour through key Southern states is being considered as a foundation for a possible 2028 presidential campaign.

Sources familiar with Harris’s plans revealed she wanted to finalize her decision before announcing her upcoming book tour this fall.

By stepping away from the governor’s race, Harris believes she will have the flexibility to pursue these broader national initiatives.

For now, her political future remains open-ended, but clearly aimed at shaping the Democratic Party’s direction heading into 2028.
