Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has officially announced his intention to run for a second term in the 2026 governorship election.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Oyebanji made the declaration during a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Central Working Committee at the party’s state secretariat in Ado-Ekiti on Monday.

The governor said his decision followed overwhelming encouragement from key stakeholders across the state.

He listed traditional rulers, professional associations, civil servants, artisans, youth groups, market women, drivers’ unions, and political leaders from across party lines as those who urged him to seek re-election.

Oyebanji stated that the second term would enable him consolidate the achievements of his first tenure and expand the delivery of good governance.

The governor also used the occasion to address concerns of internal discord within the APC in Ekiti State.

He dismissed reports of a leadership crisis in the party, declaring that the party remains united and stable.

According to him, the APC in Ekiti continues to be guided by the leadership of former Governor Niyi Adebayo and his successor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

He described both leaders as “pillars of the party” whose influence continues to shape the political direction of the state.

Oyebanji formally notified the party executives of his second-term ambition, urging them to support his campaign and pray for his success.

He reassured party members of his respect and loyalty, promising to continue leading with humility and consultation.

The governor also reiterated his appreciation for the support received from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He credited Tinubu’s economic policies with boosting the state’s development and creating an enabling environment for progress.

Oyebanji emphasized his commitment to internal democracy, noting that the APC ticket remains open to any qualified aspirant.

He encouraged citizens of Ekiti State to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

The governor’s announcement has effectively signaled the start of Ekiti’s 2026 election season, setting the tone for what is expected to be a competitive race.

Political analysts say Oyebanji’s re-election bid may be challenged from within and outside the APC, especially as opposition parties prepare to field candidates.

However, Oyebanji enters the race with the advantage of incumbency and wide grassroots support, bolstered by political goodwill from influential state actors.

His administration, which began in October 2022, has focused on infrastructure, job creation, security, and welfare reforms.

Observers will be watching closely to see whether Oyebanji’s performance record and party unity will be enough to secure him another four-year term in office.

As campaign season draws nearer, more political declarations and alignments are expected to shape the governorship landscape in Ekiti.
