(DDM) – Former United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet “very shortly” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in what could become a decisive step towards a potential peace deal aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

DDM gathered that Trump made the statement on Friday, August 8, 2025, while speaking to reporters at the White House.

He explained that the meeting could have taken place earlier but was delayed due to necessary security arrangements.

According to Trump, Putin is eager to meet “as soon as possible,” and the discussions will focus on securing an agreement to halt the conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.

Trump hinted at revealing the details of the meeting’s venue later, describing the location as “popular” and suggesting it was chosen to accommodate both parties.

Reports from CNN indicate that both the United States and Russia have been working on a potential peace plan that would formalise some of Russia’s territorial gains.

European and US officials told CNN that the proposed agreement is not yet finalised and could still collapse if either side pulls out.

A European official disclosed that Washington has been lobbying its allies to accept the deal, despite concerns from some quarters that Moscow might renege on any commitments once the agreement is signed.

Trump stressed that the urgency of ending the war cannot be overstated, adding that “a lot of people are dying” and that the talks represent a genuine opportunity for peace.

He also expressed optimism, stating that European leaders, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky all “want to see peace.”

“My instinct really tells me that we have a shot at peace,” Trump added, signalling a softer tone compared to his earlier warnings.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened to impose fresh sanctions on Russia if Putin did not agree to end the war by Friday.

However, his tone appeared more conciliatory on Thursday, saying that it would ultimately be up to Putin whether the deadline was respected.

When pressed on whether Putin would need to meet with Zelensky before a direct meeting between Trump and the Russian leader, he replied, “No, he doesn’t.”

International observers have noted that the outcome of any Trump-Putin talks could significantly reshape the geopolitical dynamics surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, especially if the deal cements current territorial realities.

If successful, the meeting could mark a pivotal moment in diplomatic efforts to end one of the most devastating conflicts in recent history.
