Spain has officially closed its airspace to U.S. military planes involved in the Iran conflict, Defense Minister Margarita Robles said Monday, marking a further step in Madrid’s opposition to the U.S. and Israel’s military actions in the Middle East.
The Spanish government had already denied the U.S. use of jointly operated bases at Rota and Morón, calling the Iran war “illegal, reckless, and unjust,” according to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Robles said the same logic applied to Spanish airspace: no American military flights related to the conflict would be authorized.
Spain has emerged as one of Europe’s loudest critics of the U.S. and Israeli operations, previously condemning Israel’s war in Gaza and threatening economic consequences when President Donald Trump suggested cutting trade over Spain’s refusal to allow base use.
