COPDEM vows to block takeover of ADC by corrupt politicians

(DDM) – The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy, COPDEM, has announced that it will not sit idle while corrupt politicians attempt to hijack the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

DDM gathered that the group through its national media made its stance known ahead of a scheduled X Space discussion on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.

The virtual event, to be hosted on the social media platform X, will focus on strategies to prevent what COPDEM describes as a creeping infiltration by corrupt political actors seeking control of the ADC.

The session is themed “COPDEM will not sit back and allow corrupt politicians to hijack the ADC.”

According to COPDEM, the growing interest of compromised individuals in the ADC is part of a broader attempt to weaken Nigeria’s democratic structures from within.

Organisers say the live conversation will feature political commentators, party loyalists, and civil society leaders committed to safeguarding the values and vision of the ADC.

The coalition accuses some politicians of targeting smaller parties as easy entry points into mainstream politics, bypassing accountability, and manipulating internal structures for personal gain.

DDM learned that COPDEM believes the ADC must be protected from any takeover that would compromise its progressive principles or alienate its grassroots supporters.

The group has pledged to use every lawful means, including public mobilisation and media advocacy, to expose and block such attempts.

Sources within COPDEM stress that political infiltration has historically weakened parties in Nigeria, with several platforms reduced to “briefcase parties” after internal hijacks.

They warn that once a party is captured by corrupt interests, it often abandons its founding ideology and becomes a vehicle for personal enrichment.

The X Space conversation is expected to generate wide engagement, with calls for increased vigilance across party ranks and the establishment of stronger safeguards against manipulation.

Analysts told DDM that COPDEM’s public stand could energise reform-minded members of the ADC and other smaller parties to resist similar threats.

The coalition’s leadership insists that protecting the ADC is not just about one party but about defending democratic integrity in Nigeria as a whole.

Participants in the session will also examine the role of civil society in monitoring party processes and promoting transparency in political structures.

With political realignments intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections, observers say smaller parties like the ADC could become prime targets for political hijack by entrenched power brokers.

COPDEM’s warning and planned mobilisation reflect a broader struggle for the soul of Nigeria’s democracy at a time when public trust in political institutions remains fragile.
