Incumbent President of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been re-elected to a second term with a landslide victory.

According to results released by the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) on Sunday, Tebboune secured 94.7% of votes.

Tebboune, 78, who is backed by the military, won the election with a significant margin, with his closest challengers, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif and Youcef Aouchiche, securing only 3% and 2.1% of the vote, respectively.

The election was marked by a turnout of 48%, with some allegations of irregularities raised by Hassani Cherif’s campaign, including pressure on polling station officials and failures to deliver vote-sorting records.

Despite these claims, ANIE head Mohamed Charfi maintained that the body had worked to ensure transparency and fair competition among all candidates.

Tebboune’s re-election is expected to maintain the status quo, with the president promising to continue his governing program, which includes increased social spending and public housing programs.

*Criticisms:

Diaspora Digital Media gleans that critics hold that his victory will only entrench the country’s authoritarian regime and stifle opposition voices.

The election has been criticized for its repressive atmosphere, with activists and international organizations denouncing the harassment and prosecutions of opposition parties, media organizations, and civil society groups.

Many young Algerians have also expressed disinterest in the election, feeling that their vote does not matter in a system dominated by the military and political elite.

*Tebboune’s immediate promises:

The president has promised to address the country’s economic challenges, including high unemployment and poverty, which disproportionately affect the youth.

However, his government has been accused of mismanaging the economy and relying too heavily on oil exports.

The election has also been marked by a lack of major changes, with many analysts predicting a continuation of the current political landscape.

His victory is seen as a consolidation of power for the military-backed regime, which has ruled Algeria for decades.

Algeria:

Algeria is a vast country in North Africa, covering 2.4 million square kilometers.

It shares borders with several countries and has a diverse geography, featuring mountains, deserts, and a Mediterranean coastline.

Algeria has a rich cultural heritage, shaped by its strategic location and history of colonization.

The country has a diverse population of 43 million people, comprising Arabs, Berbers, and Tuaregs.

Algeria’s economy relies heavily on oil and natural gas exports, but the country is working to diversify and address challenges like corruption and unemployment.

Despite these issues, Algeria has made progress in developing its infrastructure and promoting tourism.
