Abuja Man Fakes Kidnapping To Raise N4m For Christmas

(DDM) – An Abuja-based security guard allegedly staged his own kidnapping in a bid to extort N4 million from his family.

The incident reportedly occurred in the lead-up to the Christmas celebrations, with the man claiming that he needed the money to travel home for the festive season.

Family members, alarmed by the supposed abduction, reportedly began arranging funds to meet the ransom demand, unaware that the kidnapping was fabricated.

Authorities were alerted after inconsistencies emerged in the man’s story, prompting an investigation into the alleged abduction.

Police sources confirmed that the security guard confessed to faking the kidnapping during questioning, explaining that the motive was financial gain linked to Christmas travel expenses.

The case has sparked outrage among residents, with many condemning the use of false criminal claims to extort money from loved ones.

Security experts warned that such acts can strain law enforcement resources and divert attention from genuine criminal incidents.

Authorities have advised families to verify information immediately before transferring funds in alleged kidnapping cases.

Legal analysts noted that the man could face serious charges, including fraud, false reporting, and obstruction of justice, if prosecuted.

The incident highlights broader concerns about the rise of fake kidnapping scams in Nigeria, particularly during high-spending periods like the festive season.

Police said public awareness and prompt reporting are critical in preventing similar fraudulent activities in communities.

Residents expressed shock that someone could risk criminal liability and family trust for personal gain, especially during the season of goodwill.

Officials emphasised that the case serves as a cautionary tale, urging individuals to exercise prudence in responding to ransom threats.

Investigators are reviewing the circumstances to determine if any accomplices were involved in orchestrating the deception.

The Abuja security guard reportedly admitted to planning the scheme in advance, exploiting his family’s concern and the festive context to pressure them financially.

Authorities warned that anyone found culpable in such scams could face imprisonment and other legal penalties under Nigerian law.

Experts highlighted that fake kidnapping incidents not only cause emotional trauma to families but also create unnecessary panic within communities.

Law enforcement agencies continue to educate the public about common signs of fraudulent kidnappings and preventive measures to avoid financial losses.

The police have assured citizens that strict action will be taken against the security guard to serve as a deterrent for similar offences.

Community leaders called for increased vigilance and collaboration with security agencies to safeguard families against exploitation during festive periods.

According to DDM findings, the Abuja security guard remains in police custody while investigations continue, with prosecutors expected to file charges in accordance with Nigerian criminal law.
