(DDM) – Suspected terrorists have ambushed security operatives in Shanga Local Government Area, killing at least 11 soldiers, one police officer, and several civilians in a deadly attack on Giro Masa community.
The assault reportedly took place on Tuesday night, catching the troops off guard during the operation.
Sources indicate that the attackers launched a coordinated strike, overwhelming the security personnel stationed in the area.
In the course of the attack, the assailants also set fire to two military gun trucks, destroying critical operational equipment.
The incident marks one of the latest violent confrontations in the region, which has witnessed recurring security challenges in recent times.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the attack while addressing journalists after visiting the affected community.
He also visited the morgue where the bodies of the deceased security personnel were deposited.
The governor described the incident as tragic and condemned the killing of both security operatives and civilians.
During his visit, he proceeded to the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kebbi, where injured victims were receiving treatment.
Medical personnel were said to be attending to survivors, some of whom sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Authorities have yet to release the exact number of civilian casualties, but reports indicate that several residents were caught in the violence.
Security agencies are expected to intensify operations in the area in response to the attack.
