ADC faction protests at INEC HQ, seeks recognition of Nafiu Bala as Natl’ chair

Supporters of a faction within the African Democratic Congress staged a protest on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja.

The protesters, led by Nafiu Bala, called on INEC to recognise him as the party’s National Chairman. They said their demand is based on a Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 12, 2026, which they believe should be respected.

The demonstration is coming amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party, with different groups claiming control.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans like “Obey the Court” and “INEC must recognise Nafiu Bala,” the protesters tried to access the commission’s office but were stopped by security personnel.

Speaking to journalists, Bala’s aide, Abimiku Monday, accused INEC of ignoring a valid court ruling. He said the party had already notified the commission about the judgment through its lawyers and even followed up with another letter.

According to him, refusing to obey a court order weakens the rule of law and could damage public trust in democratic institutions.

Other speakers at the protest also stressed the need for INEC to remain neutral and resist pressure from political interests. They warned that failing to act fairly could affect the credibility of future elections.

One of the activists, Basah Mohammed, said the protest was not about politics but about protecting democracy and ensuring institutions do the right thing.

Reacting to the protest, an INEC official, Mohammed Hamma, told the group that the commission’s leadership was currently in Lagos for an official assignment. However, he assured them that their petition would be received and delivered.
