(DDM) – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly cautioned the newly appointed National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, against using his former experience at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to influence future elections in favour of his party.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the warning was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the party’s spokesperson, Bola Abdullahi.

The statement stressed that Yilwatda’s background as a former Resident Electoral Commissioner gave him significant insights into electoral processes, which must be employed to safeguard democracy, not compromise it.

Abdullahi highlighted that such experience should reinforce electoral transparency and public confidence in the system, rather than enable manipulation that has reportedly occurred under the APC’s administration.

“We are aware of Professor Yilwatda’s past as a Resident Electoral Commissioner.

It is a role that entails a deep understanding of impartiality, ethical conduct, and public accountability.

We hope he will use that knowledge to strengthen our democracy, not erode it for partisan benefit,” Abdullahi stated.

The ADC also expressed concern over the venue of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, during which Yilwatda was elected.

The party condemned the use of the Aso Villa, a public facility funded by Nigerian taxpayers, for partisan party activities.

Abdullahi emphasized that holding a party’s internal meeting inside a government building was inappropriate and sent the wrong message about the separation between state resources and political interests.

“It is disappointing that the NEC meeting where Professor Yilwatda was confirmed took place inside the State House. That building belongs to the Nigerian people, not to any political party,” Abdullahi noted.

The ADC reiterated its commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process and urged all political actors to respect democratic values and the sanctity of public institutions.
