ADC Woos North Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Senate President and acting ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, has declared that Northern Nigeria’s major problems are self-inflicted.

He stressed that unity and shared purpose must return if the region hopes to recover from its political and economic decline.

Mark made this statement while delivering the keynote address at the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group in Abuja.

He urged Northern leaders to revive values that once defined the region peace, justice, and development.

According to him, the North once stood strong because of unity and mutual respect.

Today, it struggles with deep insecurity, poverty, and political fragmentation.

He linked these problems to internal divisions, tribal politics, and neglect of shared values.

“The North must return to the path of oneness,” Mark said. “We must stop blaming others and accept responsibility for our situation.”

He described the region as blessed with resources, fertile land, and rich cultural diversity.

Yet, it suffers from avoidable setbacks. “We are the architects of our problems,” he stated, urging Northern leaders to unite and act decisively.

Mark also warned that division and indifference have weakened the region.

He called for justice, mutual respect, and a return to the First Republic’s inclusive spirit. During that era, leaders ignored tribal and religious labels and worked for the common good.

Moreover, Mark explained how insecurity scares away investors, while poverty fuels crime.

Ethnic tensions also prevent the North from speaking with one voice. As a result, meaningful progress remains out of reach.

“There is a path to a better future,” he said. “But we must abandon hate and divisive politics. We must return to our values.”

Mark reminded the audience of the legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello. Under Bello’s leadership, the North thrived. He treated everyone equally, regardless of tribe or faith.

Mark concluded by asking, “When did we abandon ‘One North, One People’? When did we allow tribalism to define us?”
