Ekiti State, Nigeria — On July 29, 2025, INEC held a stakeholders meeting at its Ado-Ekiti headquarters to plan for the upcoming CVR exercise.

The meeting drew representatives from political parties, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), security agencies, and INEC officers from all 16 local government areas.

Dr. Bunmi Omosehinde, the State REC, warmly welcomed attendees and expressed gratitude for their participation.

He stressed the significance of the CVR, which will begin online on August 18 and with physical biometric registration on August 25, 2025.

He stated, “It is both an honor and responsibility to host this stakeholder meeting before the CVR exercise begins.”

Dr. Omosehinde explained that INEC’s constitutional mandate includes registering Nigerians to vote in future elections.

Moreover, he noted that CVR preparations support the 2026 Ekiti Governorship election and other upcoming electoral activities.

This process allows eligible citizens, including new voters or those never registered, to join the National Register of Voters.

In addition, voters can transfer registration details, correct personal information, or replace lost or damaged PVCs through this process.

The REC urged political parties and CSOs to actively mobilize citizens and sensitize them about the CVR while following legal guidelines.

He assured stakeholders that INEC is committed to deploying necessary technologies and maintaining transparency throughout the process.

To ensure accessibility and legal compliance, measures have been put in place, he added.

Dr. Omosehinde clarified that registration will take place at designated centers across Ekiti State, including INEC local government offices.

Furthermore, INEC is collaborating closely with security agencies and partners to guarantee a seamless and credible registration process.

“Together, let us ensure that no eligible voter in Ekiti is left behind,” he concluded.

Stakeholders Respond

Following Dr. Omosehinde’s address, representatives from various organizations shared their perspectives on the CVR exercise.

A representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) commended INEC for its preparations.

However, he urged the commission to ensure its staff remains responsive and professional throughout the registration process.

He warned against attitudes that could frustrate registrants and emphasized that political parties must avoid divisive politics to promote unity.

The Chairman of the Accord Party expressed concerns about public sensitization efforts.

He asked who is responsible for informing citizens about the CVR exercise effectively.

In response, Dr. Omosehinde explained that, although INEC provides the framework for registration, political parties primarily mobilize and educate citizens on their civic responsibilities.

Roles and Responsibilities of Political Parties

Dr. Omosehinde outlined specific roles expected of political parties during the CVR exercise:

1. Voter Mobilization and Sensitization: Educate eligible citizens on the importance of registering to vote and encourage participation.
2. Observation: Deploy party agents to observe the registration process, ensuring transparency and reporting irregularities.
3. Internal Voter Education: Inform members about registration procedures, eligibility requirements, and designated centers.
4. Advocacy and Engagement: Collaborate with INEC and other stakeholders to address issues affecting the CVR process.
5. Promoting Peaceful Conduct: Ensure members uphold democratic principles, refrain from intimidation, and promote peaceful participation.

National Orientation Agency Pledges Support

Mrs. Akomolafe Kemisola, the Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), assured attendees of active support.

Consequently, her agency will promote public sensitization through radio jingles and educational programs emphasizing voter registration importance.

She emphasized that civic education remains a critical component of ensuring widespread participation in the CVR exercise.

INEC’s Commitment to Fairness

Dr. Omosehinde reaffirmed INEC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights throughout the registration process.
He also urged political parties to strictly follow the commission’s rules by ensuring only eligible voters, aged 18 and above, participate.
This emphasizes the importance of transparency and fairness in the voter registration exercise, fostering public trust in the system.

As Ekiti State prepares for the CVR exercise, stakeholders expressed strong optimism about achieving a credible and transparent registration process.

Furthermore, they believe this effort will significantly enhance democratic participation and ultimately strengthen electoral integrity ahead of the upcoming elections.

Such positive outlook underscores the community’s dedication to improving voter engagement and ensuring a fair electoral environment.

The meeting concluded with a collective pledge from all participants to collaborate effectively.

They committed to working together diligently toward a successful CVR exercise in Ekiti State.

This unified effort aims to promote a smooth, inclusive registration process that benefits all citizens and national democracy.
