The road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations officially began after the Confederation of African Football unveiled the qualifying draw, producing several major fixtures across the continent, including a highly anticipated clash between West African rivals Ghana and Ivory Coast.

The draw ceremony, held in Cairo, Egypt, confirmed the groups that will determine qualification for the continent’s biggest football competition, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2027.

Among the biggest talking points from the draw was the placement of Ghana and Ivory Coast in the same qualification group, a matchup already generating excitement among football fans due to the intense rivalry and history shared by both nations.

The pairing is expected to become one of the headline fixtures of the qualifying campaign, with supporters anticipating fierce competition between two countries widely regarded as football powerhouses in Africa.

Ghana, four time African champions, are entering the qualifiers under pressure after their disappointing failure to qualify for the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars suffered a difficult campaign that saw them finish outside the qualification places, a setback that triggered criticism from supporters and football analysts across the country.

The failure to secure qualification for the previous tournament raised serious concerns about the direction of Ghanaian football and led to calls for reforms within the national team structure. Since then, efforts have been made to rebuild the squad and restore confidence ahead of the new qualifying campaign.

Despite recent struggles, Ghana remain one of Africa’s most respected football nations, with a long history of success on the continental stage. The team is expected to rely on a blend of experienced players and emerging talents as they attempt to return to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ivory Coast, meanwhile, continue to maintain their status among Africa’s elite football countries. The Elephants have consistently remained competitive in major tournaments and are widely recognised for their physical strength, technical quality, and attacking style of football.

The Ivorian national team enters the qualifiers with growing confidence following strong performances in recent international competitions. Football observers believe the squad possesses enough quality and depth to challenge for another major continental title.

Beyond the rivalry between Ghana and Ivory Coast, the AFCON qualifying draw also produced several other interesting groups involving top African football nations.

Morocco, one of the continent’s strongest teams in recent years, were drawn alongside Gabon, Niger, and Lesotho. Egypt will face Angola, Malawi, and South Sudan, while South Africa were grouped with Guinea, Kenya, and Eritrea.

Other football heavyweights including Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria, Cameroon, and Tunisia also discovered their qualification opponents during the ceremony, setting the stage for another competitive journey toward Africa’s biggest football tournament.

CAF confirmed that the qualification campaign will involve 48 national teams divided into 12 groups of four teams each. Countries will compete in home and away matches across several FIFA international windows before the final list of qualified teams is confirmed.

The top teams from each group are expected to secure qualification places for the tournament finals, although the format will slightly differ for groups involving the host nations, who already qualify automatically for the competition.

The 2027 tournament is expected to hold special significance for African football because it will mark one of the largest sporting events jointly hosted in East Africa in modern times.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are currently preparing infrastructure, transportation systems, stadium upgrades, and hospitality facilities ahead of the tournament. CAF officials have expressed confidence that the three countries will deliver a successful competition capable of showcasing African football to a global audience.

The upcoming qualification series is also expected to provide opportunities for several emerging football nations seeking to challenge traditional continental powers.

Football analysts believe the expanded competitiveness across Africa means no team can afford complacency during qualification, especially as smaller nations continue to improve tactically and technically.

The Ghana and Ivory Coast rivalry, however, remains one of the standout narratives heading into the campaign. Both nations possess passionate fan bases, strong football traditions, and a history of memorable encounters in international tournaments.

Supporters across Africa are already anticipating emotionally charged matches between the two sides, with many expecting the fixtures to influence the final standings within the group.

Qualification matches are scheduled to begin during the next FIFA international windows, with national teams expected to intensify preparations in the coming months as they target places at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
