The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action in releasing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the group described Kanu’s continued detention as politically motivated and unjustifiable, insisting that his release is necessary for justice and national reconciliation.

In a communiqué signed by its deputy leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Afenifere made this demand after a meeting held at the Isanya Ogbo residence of its leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

The organization strongly condemned Kanu’s prolonged incarceration, which began with his abduction and rendition to Nigeria in 2021.

“From all indications, particularly the circumstances surrounding his abduction and the conflicting legal proceedings that have followed, it is clear that Nnamdi Kanu is a political detainee.

His fair trial is no longer guaranteed, as observed by reasonable members of the public,” the communiqué stated.

Afenifere maintained that the government has no justifiable reason to continue detaining Kanu without trial.

The group stressed that releasing him would be a crucial step toward fostering national unity and addressing political grievances.

In addition to addressing Kanu’s detention, Afenifere used the opportunity to express concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

The group noted that despite a change in administration, insecurity remains as dire as it was under the previous government.

It urged President Tinubu to take bold and strategic measures to ensure the safety of citizens across the country.

Citing the recent alarm raised by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde about the influx of bandits, Afenifere reiterated its long-standing demand for restructuring.

The group emphasized that Nigeria, with its vast population and federal structure, cannot be effectively secured under a centralized policing system.

“Nigeria’s security challenges cannot be managed with a single-command unitary police system.

We need restructuring to enable the constitutional institutionalization of state police,” the communiqué read.

In addition to security concerns, Afenifere also announced key appointments within the organization.

Barrister Dele Farotimi was appointed as the new national organizing secretary, further strengthening the group’s leadership structure.

The meeting, presided over by deputy leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan, had in attendance prominent figures from the South West, Kogi, and Kwara states.

Among the notable attendees were former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor Akerele; Secretary General, Chief Sola Ebiseni; Chief Akin Osuntokun; Professor Akin Onigbinde; Elder Tola Mobolurin; Dr. Gbola Adetuji; Olorogun Pop Ayo-Banjo; and the national publicity secretary, Prince Justice Faloye.

Afenifere concluded its communiqué by urging the federal government to act swiftly in addressing these pressing national issues.

The group insisted that only through fair governance, justice, and structural reforms can Nigeria achieve lasting peace and progress.
