Airlines Plan Shutdown Over Fuel Price Hike Threatening Operations

Share this:

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigerian domestic airlines are planning a potential shutdown of operations from Thursday following a sharp increase in aviation fuel prices, raising concerns over widespread travel disruptions across the country.

Industry operators disclosed that the planned action could take effect on Thursday, April 30, 2026, if urgent interventions are not made to address the rising cost of Jet A1 fuel, which they describe as unsustainable.

Airline executives warned that the continuous spike in fuel prices has significantly increased operational costs, making it difficult for carriers to maintain regular flight schedules without incurring heavy losses.

The operators explained that aviation fuel accounts for a major portion of airline expenses, and the recent surge has pushed many airlines to the brink of financial strain.

They noted that despite previous warnings and appeals to the federal government, little progress has been made in stabilizing fuel prices or providing relief measures to the aviation sector.

Passengers across the country are already expressing concern over the possible shutdown, which could disrupt business activities, delay travel plans, and affect economic productivity.

Aviation stakeholders emphasized that the situation is not only a threat to airlines but also to the broader economy, as air transport plays a critical role in connecting major cities and supporting commerce.

Industry analysts pointed out that Nigeria’s aviation sector has long struggled with high operating costs, including fluctuating exchange rates, maintenance expenses, and infrastructure challenges.

The latest development, they say, could worsen an already fragile sector if immediate action is not taken to address the underlying issues.

Airline operators are calling for government intervention, including possible subsidies, improved access to foreign exchange, and policies aimed at stabilizing fuel supply and pricing.

They also urged regulatory authorities to engage stakeholders in meaningful dialogue to prevent a complete shutdown of operations.

The federal government has yet to issue an official response, but sources indicate that discussions may be underway to avert the looming crisis.

As Thursday approaches, uncertainty continues to grow within the aviation industry, with both operators and passengers watching closely for any resolution that could prevent a nationwide disruption of air travel.
