By Amadie Akpabio

The Honourable Commissioner for Education in Akwa Ibom State, Professor Ubong Essien Umoh, has commended His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for initiating the construction of internal roads within the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, and for his unwavering commitment to advancing educational development in the state.
Professor Umoh delivered his remarks during the institution’s 34th NCE, 7th Degree, and 2nd batch of Sandwich/Part-time Matriculation Ceremony, held on February 28, 2025, at the college’s sports grounds.
The event marked the formal admission of 851 freshmen into various academic programs.
In his address, the Commissioner urged the new students to embrace teaching as a noble and impactful profession.
He emphasized the global demand for skilled educators and encouraged the matriculants to dedicate themselves to their studies, uphold the values of the institution, and strive to become exemplary ambassadors of the college.
Professor Umoh, a renowned scholar in military history, also highlighted the college’s remarkable journey since its establishment in 1991 as a Teachers Training Institute.
He expressed optimism about the institution’s proposed upgrade to a University of Education, describing it as a timely and necessary transformation.
He assured the students that this would be the last matriculation ceremony conducted under the college’s current status, as the institution is poised for a significant academic elevation.
The Provost of the college, Professor Daniel Udo, echoed these sentiments in his welcome address.
He congratulated the newly admitted students on their successful enrollment, describing it as the realization of a cherished dream.
Professor Udo urged the students to take their academic pursuits seriously, adhere to the institution’s rules and regulations, and avoid behaviors such as cultism, examination malpractice, and other vices that could jeopardize their educational journey.
“Teaching is a noble profession, and as a teacher-training institution, we maintain zero tolerance for indiscipline and dishonesty,” the Provost stated. “You are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of this academic community, as enshrined in your matriculation oath. Make the most of this opportunity, focus on your goals, and strive for excellence.”
Professor Udo also highlighted the college’s rapid growth and development, attributing its progress to the unwavering support of Governor Umo Eno and his administration.
He expressed gratitude for the governor’s approval and funding of the ongoing internal road construction project, which is set to transform the institution’s infrastructure and align with the ARISE Agenda of the Akwa Ibom State government.
The Provost revealed that the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony would be the last conducted by the college in its current form, as plans are underway to transition the institution into a University of Education.
He shared that the college had recently been invited by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Education to contribute to a bill proposing the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education.
This development, he noted, has generated excitement among staff and students, who eagerly anticipate the benefits of the upgrade.
A breakdown of the matriculating students revealed 23 admitted into the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) program, 755 into degree programs, and 71 into Sandwich/Part-time programs.
The increasing number of students seeking admission to degree programs underscores the institution’s growing reputation and academic excellence.
The ceremony also featured a keynote address by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Reverend Sister Anthonia Essien.
The Vice Chancellor encouraged the students to aim high, avoid distractions, and remain focused on their academic goals.
He reminded them that the convocation ceremony, which marks the completion of their studies, is even more significant than matriculation and should serve as their ultimate objective.
The event was graced by dignitaries from various sectors, including management staff, deans, heads of departments, the State Coordinator of JAMB, members of the college community, union representatives, parents, guardians, traditional rulers, clergy, and security personnel.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath and the signing of the matriculation register by the 851 new students.
The atmosphere was filled with joy and celebration as students, accompanied by their families and friends, marked the beginning of their academic journey.
The ceremony not only celebrated the students’ achievements but also highlighted the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and the transformative power of education.
