The Imo State Government has responded to allegations of keeping silent about the Fulani herdsmen issue, warning citizens against promoting ethnic tensions and divisions in the name of fighting insecurity.

The government emphasized that profiling and stereotyping a particular ethnic group could endanger the safety and security of Ndigbo residing in other parts of the country.

The controversy surrounding Fulani herdsmen in Imo State has been ongoing, with some communities expressing concerns about their activities.

In April 2025, communities in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area protested alleged forced land acquisition for Fulani herdsmen settlement, citing concerns about the impact on their livelihoods.

The state government had previously rejected plans to establish Ruga farm settlements for Fulani herdsmen in 2019, with Governor Emeka Ihedioha stating that no governor in the Southeast would accept such a proposal .

The Imo State Government has dissociated itself from an ultimatum given to Fulani herdsmen to vacate the state, describing the group that issued the ultimatum as lacking legitimacy.

The government has also denied allegations of paying N8 million to Fulani herdsmen who allegedly lost their cows in Ezinihitte, Mbaise, labeling the claims as fake news.

In response to the current allegations of silence, the government is urging citizens to avoid ethnic profiling and stereotyping .

In February 2025, the Imo State Police Command arrested a man for circulating a false notice about a planned Fulani herdsmen attack in Umuoba, Irete, which caused widespread panic.

This incident highlights the need for accurate information and responsible communication to prevent unnecessary fear and tension.
