Alleged Defamation: Justice for Afe Babalola Group Vows to Ensure Accountability
DDM News

The controversy surrounding the defamation lawsuit filed by esteemed legal luminary, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), against Dele Farotimi, has continued to generate heated debates.
Amid the ongoing discussions, a group known as “Justice for Afe Babalola Legacy” has called for calm and urged Nigerians to focus on truth rather than be swayed by social media distractions and unfounded narratives.
Diaspora Digital Media DDM gathered in a press conference held in Ado-Ekiti, that the group emphasized the importance of truth in judicial proceedings, condemning what it described as a skewed representation of the case.
The group’s Publicity Secretary and spokesperson, Mr. Rotimi Opeyeoluwa, took the opportunity to debunk claims of persecution surrounding the lawsuit.
He insisted that the matter is not about suppressing freedom of speech but about ensuring that the judiciary handles accusations with due process and fairness.
“The narrative being peddled on social media suggests persecution, but this is far from the truth.
What we are witnessing is a judicial process aimed at ensuring accountability,” Opeyeoluwa stated.
He reaffirmed the group’s commitment to seeing the legal proceedings through, asserting that both parties—Aare Afe Babalola and Mr. Dele Farotimi—deserve justice.
The dispute centers on allegations made by Dele Farotimi in a self-published book, which the group claims contains defamatory statements against Aare Afe Babalola.
Farotimi, a lawyer and rights activist, is known for his strong advocacy on national issues, but his assertions about Babalola have drawn sharp criticism.
Opeyeoluwa argued that the allegations are baseless, with no tangible evidence presented to substantiate the claims.
According to Opeyeoluwa, the situation goes beyond mere advocacy.
“Advocacy must be rooted in facts, not fabrications.
“What we see here is a deliberate attempt to smear the reputation of an iconic legal figure under the guise of human rights activism,” he said.
He described Farotimi’s allegations as reckless and unbecoming of a legal practitioner, emphasizing that the judicial system must act as a deterrent against such actions.
The group also expressed concern about the growing trend of using social media as a platform to propagate misinformation and attack reputations without consequence.
“The legal profession is one of integrity and respect.
Aare Afe Babalola has dedicated decades to upholding these values.
To attempt to tarnish his legacy with unfounded claims is not only irresponsible but a disservice to the profession and the nation,” Opeyeoluwa added.
Calling on Nigerians to allow the judicial process to run its course, the group highlighted the importance of respecting the courts and the rule of law.
They cautioned against the influence of public opinion fueled by social media campaigns, which they believe often lack objectivity and context.
The defamation case underscores a broader issue about balancing freedom of expression with accountability.
While individuals like Farotimi have the right to express their opinions, these rights come with responsibilities, particularly when such expressions have the potential to harm the reputation of others.
The group concluded by affirming its support for Aare Afe Babalola’s decision to seek redress through legal channels. “We shall remain resolute in ensuring that justice is served.
The courts are the appropriate venue for resolving such disputes, and we trust the judiciary to act impartially,” Opeyeoluwa concluded.
As the case unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the need for caution in public discourse, especially when it involves the reputation of revered individuals like Aare Afe Babalola.
