Alumni of Ojukwu University wants Obiano to stem VC tenure crisis

The Alumni Association of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, Anambra state has called on the state governor, Willie Obiano, and the Attorney-General of the state, Nnali Chude to rise to the occasion.

They want him to wade into the crisis rocking the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor of the institution so as to save every stakeholder the current festering embarrassment therefrom.

The National President of the University’s alumni association, Mr Emeka Amanchukwu said the Alumni would not take sides with any of the warring parties and would want the rule of law to guide all in the circumstance.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the non-academic staff of the institution have been at war over plans to elongate the tenure of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof Fidelis Okafor.

The tenure of the Vice Chancellor was expected to lapse next month, (September).

While ASUU would want the governor to appoint a new person as the Vice Chancellor of the university, the non-teaching staff are rooting for the extension of Okafor’s tenure.

The non-academic staff, according to reports, are of the opinion that Okafor served substantially as vice chancellor when the university was known as Anambra state University and therefore is entitled to a fresh appointment now that the university has a different name.

But for ASUU that argument does not hold water and said the law on the appointment of a vice chancellor of the university should  be followed.

He called on the visitor of the university, that is the state governor, Willie Obiano to cause the state’s attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to advise him on the relevant laws in that regard.

According to him, “We are not lawyers. 

“The governor should wade into the crisis after due consultation with his Attorney-General, who is the number one legal officer of the state.

“This will save us and everybody this embarrassment, the Alumni President stated.
