Violence erupted in the Nri community of Anambra State on Friday, August 1, as supporters of APGA and APC clashed during separate campaign rallies.

The clash took place in Anaocha Local Government Area and involved the supporters of APGA governorship candidate, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and APC deputy governorship candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.

According to eyewitnesses, both parties had events scheduled in the community that day.

APGA supporters, led by a popular lawyer known as Ezeafia, hosted Soludo at one location.

Meanwhile, Senator Ekwunife, running mate to APC candidate Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, met her supporters elsewhere in the same town.

Suddenly, trouble broke out when some APC loyalists accused APGA members of destroying their campaign billboards.

The tension escalated quickly into a violent clash.

Supporters from both parties reportedly pulled down campaign posters and banners.

Immediately, police operatives from the Anambra State Command stormed the scene and brought the situation under control.

Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident in an official statement.

He explained that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, responded swiftly.

He summoned both factions for a peace meeting at the police headquarters.

“The Anambra State Police Command intervened after receiving a report of a political clash in Nri during campaign activities,” Ikenga stated.

Furthermore, he revealed that three billboards belonging to one party were allegedly torn down by the rival group.

This action sparked outrage and chaos.

However, both parties agreed to replace the damaged billboards immediately.

Although, some claimed the billboards were removed due to unpaid signage fees.

Nevertheless, CP Orutugu urged all political players to act responsibly. He reminded supporters to avoid violence and follow the law.

He also ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Political Desk for further review.
