Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate George Moghalu has described the ongoing Anambra State governorship election as “scandalous and deeply embarrassing,” citing widespread reports of vote-buying across the state.
Speaking to journalists at his Nnewi North residence on Saturday, Moghalu condemned the practice, urging security agencies to take swift action against perpetrators. He warned that such acts severely compromise the credibility of the electoral process.
“The situation is scandalous and very embarrassing. Vote-buying is no longer speculation,” Moghalu said. “It happened aggressively during the last by-election, and I’m now receiving reports of the same thing occurring again.”
Despite the heavy security presence deployed for the election, Moghalu expressed frustration that vote-buyers remain active.
“With the level of security deployed, I would expect that vote buyers should have been apprehended by now,” he added.
Moghalu also emphasised his confidence in his campaign and commitment to due process. He described the ongoing vote-buying as “most unfortunate” and stressed that it undermines public trust in democracy.
“I remain optimistic. I’ve conducted my campaign strictly according to the rules, so I sleep peacefully and watch things unfold. I offer voters my wealth of experience in both public and private sectors, and I encourage them to verify who I am,” Moghalu said.
The LP candidate’s comments come amid heightened concerns over election integrity in Anambra, with other candidates and observers raising similar alarms about financial inducements at polling units.
