The Anambra State Government has announced a temporary restriction of movement across the state on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as part of a comprehensive environmental sanitation and waste evacuation exercise aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo said the initiative forms part of his administration’s renewed efforts to address environmental degradation, improve public sanitation, and reduce the growing threat of flooding caused by blocked drainage channels and indiscriminate waste disposal.
According to the government, residents are expected to remain within their homes and actively participate in cleaning their surroundings during the sanitation period. The exercise will involve the evacuation of refuse, clearing of drainage systems, desilting of waterways, and removal of environmental hazards across communities in the state.
The movement restriction is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday. While some notices circulating on social media indicate that the exercise will end at 10:00 a.m., reports from major national media organizations state that the restriction is expected to remain in effect until 11:00 a.m. Residents have been advised to monitor official government updates for confirmation of the closing time.
Governor Soludo emphasized that environmental cleanliness is critical to the well-being of the state, describing environmental degradation as one of the greatest threats facing communities. He urged residents, market associations, transport unions, community leaders, religious organizations, youth groups, and business owners to fully comply with the directive by cleaning their homes, business premises, and surrounding areas.
The statewide sanitation exercise is part of the government’s broader environmental reform agenda following its declaration of a state of emergency on environmental degradation. The administration has repeatedly expressed concern over the increasing incidence of flooding, erosion, and poor waste management, attributing many of these challenges to indiscriminate refuse disposal, blocked drainage channels, and illegal structures obstructing waterways.
Government officials noted that the sanitation exercise is designed not only to improve the physical appearance of communities but also to protect public health by reducing environmental conditions that encourage the spread of diseases.
Essential service providers, including security agencies, healthcare workers, ambulance services, fire service personnel, accredited journalists, and other emergency responders, will be exempt from the movement restriction to ensure uninterrupted delivery of critical services throughout the exercise.
Residents have been encouraged to dispose of waste responsibly and cooperate with sanitation officials deployed across the state. Environmental task force personnel are also expected to monitor compliance and ensure that drainage channels and public spaces are properly cleared.
