The Anambra State Police Command has arrested six suspects involved in various criminal activities during “stop and search” operations at different checkpoints across the state.

In a statement on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrests and stated that officers recovered various weapons and other incriminating items from the suspects.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), Ikenga revealed that operatives from the Anaku Divisional Headquarters intercepted a group of eight individuals at Anaku/Omor Junction while conducting a routine search.

However, during the search, the suspects attempted to escape.

The police pursued them and successfully arrested three, recovering weapons concealed in a bag.

The statement read, “Following the enhanced operational strategy introduced by Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam, the Anambra State Command, on February 2, 2025, arrested six suspects during separate stop-and-search exercises across the state.

“Among the recovered items were a locally made double-barrel gun, a locally made revolver pistol, one 7.62mm live round, a metal axe, a Q-Link motorcycle with registration number JRV 760 QH, a gallon of a suspected hard drug, a local pot, and white and red clothing with the inscription ‘NBM’ and the number 7.

“Other seized items included multiple pieces of red and white cloth, candles, three Android phones, and four ATM cards.”

Regarding the Anaku incident, Ikenga stated that at around 8:00 a.m. on February 2, 2025, police operatives at Anaku/Omor Junction intercepted eight suspects traveling on a motorcycle.

When the officers attempted to search them, the suspects fled.

However, the officers pursued them and captured three: Okafor Chibike, Ekene Lucky Nwadigbu, and Godwin Osaz, all residents of Omor.

During the operation, the police confiscated weapons, including a locally made double-barrel gun, a locally made revolver pistol, a dagger, three Android phones, and four ATM cards.

Security forces are currently searching for the remaining suspects who escaped during the encounter.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects are members of the Aye Confraternity and were heading to an undisclosed location for an initiation ceremony.

The police also recovered one of the motorcycles used by the gang and took it to the station.

In a separate development at Eke Awgbu Junction on February 1, 2025, around 7:43 p.m., police operatives from the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters intercepted three additional suspects traveling in a tricycle while conducting security screenings.

The three suspects were identified as Chidera Nwochia, a 20-year-old from Amiri Orlu, Imo State; Chizurumu Elvis, a 23-year-old from Mbano, Imo State; and Kosisochukwu Obiechina, a 21-year-old from Agukwu Nri, Anambra State.

During a search of the tricycle, officers discovered a 7.62mm live round, a black axe, a gallon containing a suspected hard drug, a local pot, and red and white clothing inscribed with “NBM” and the number 7.

They also found several pieces of similar clothing and candles.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted to being members of the Black Axe Confraternity and disclosed that they were on their way to an initiation site.

The police seized the tricycle used for their transport and took them into custody.

According to Ikenga, all six suspects will face charges in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
