(DDM) – The Anambra State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled a major child trafficking syndicate operating within the state, rescuing 33 underage girls in the process.

The operation, carried out in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, followed intelligence-led investigations that led officers to a location suspected to be a holding centre for trafficked minors.

Police sources disclosed that the rescued girls were all under the age of 18 and were allegedly being prepared for illegal trafficking to undisclosed destinations.

According to the command, one suspect was arrested at the scene during the raid and is currently in police custody.

Investigators said the arrest was made after weeks of discreet surveillance and tracking of suspicious movements linked to child trafficking activities.

The rescued girls were immediately taken into protective custody for medical examination, psychological support, and proper documentation.

Police authorities stated that preliminary findings suggest the girls were recruited from different parts of the state and possibly neighboring states.

Some of the victims reportedly told officers that they were lured with promises of education, employment, or better living conditions.

Others were allegedly deceived by individuals posing as caregivers or agents offering assistance to their families.

The Anambra State Police Command described the syndicate as organized and systematic, with clear roles assigned to members.

Officials said the operation reflects the command’s renewed commitment to combating human trafficking and child exploitation.

The police noted that child trafficking remains a serious challenge in parts of Nigeria, driven by poverty, ignorance, and criminal networks.

Anambra State, due to its strategic location and commercial activity, has previously recorded cases involving illegal child movement and exploitation.

The command stressed that trafficked children are often exposed to forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse.

Police spokespersons confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate.

Authorities believe the arrested suspect may provide critical information that will lead to further arrests.

Security experts noted that intelligence-driven policing is crucial in dismantling trafficking networks that often operate covertly.

They emphasized that community cooperation remains essential in preventing and detecting crimes of this nature.

Parents and guardians were advised to verify claims made by individuals offering opportunities for children outside their communities.

The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on crimes involving children.

Officials said the success of the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of proactive policing strategies.

As investigations continue, the police promised to provide updates on arrests and court proceedings.

The rescue has once again highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of child trafficking.

Stakeholders say sustained enforcement, public awareness, and social support systems are key to ending the crime.
