Blood Shortage Threatens Blast Victims as North-East Braces for More Attacks

A critical shortage of blood, particularly of A blood group, is putting the lives of victims of Monday’s triple suicide bomb blasts in Maiduguri at risk, health workers and residents have warned.

Several injured individuals are receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and other medical facilities, with some reported in critical condition and in urgent need of transfusions.

Health workers and relatives of victims have appealed to the public to donate blood immediately, noting that the ongoing Ramadan fast has reduced the number of available donors.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed at least 23 fatalities and 108 injuries, though some sources indicate the casualty figures could be higher.

In response, the Joint Task Force North East (Operation HADIN KAI) warned of a heightened risk of further suicide attacks across the North-East during the final days of Ramadan.

In a statement, Lt. Col. Sani Uba highlighted that terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP often intensify attacks during major religious periods, targeting crowded areas including mosques, markets, motor parks, and hospitals.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, unattended items, or unusual movements to security agencies.

Worshippers attending Taraweeh and Tahajjud prayers were advised to cooperate with security personnel, while parents were urged to monitor children’s movements.

Community leaders, religious authorities, market associations, and transport unions were also encouraged to support security efforts through public sensitisation.

The military assured the public that surveillance, patrols, and protective measures have been heightened across critical locations to prevent further attacks and ensure safe observance of the remaining Ramadan period and upcoming Eid celebrations.

“Public cooperation remains a critical component of counter-terrorism efforts. If you see something, say something. Security is everyone’s responsibility,” the statement concluded.
