Nollywood actress Anita Joseph has addressed allegations made by influencer Caramel, who accused her of posting an AI-edited version of her photo with her face replaced.
The controversy began after Caramel claimed she returned to Instagram from a break only to discover a familiar image this time allegedly altered and shared under Anita Joseph’s name. Calling out the actress publicly, she questioned how someone she does not know could take her photo, swap the face, and post it.
“You don’t even follow me on any socials, we don’t know each other… you removed my head from my picture and inserted your head in it and posted it publicly?” Caramel wrote, while also sharing what she described as the original version of the image.
In response, Anita Joseph did not deny the post but instead attributed the situation to a member of her creative team. According to her, the image was generated using AI without her knowledge.
“Chai, my AI boy said it was an inspiration from AI… I’m so sorry, but you look great,” she said, apologising while suggesting she was unaware of the image’s origin before posting it.
The explanation sparked mixed reactions online. While some social media users sympathised with the actress and pointed to the growing role of AI in content creation, others sided with Caramel, insisting the situation amounted to image misuse regardless of intent.
Caramel, however, remained firm in her stance, dismissing the explanation and reiterating her claim with a blunt response: “She stole it.”
The incident has reignited conversations around the use of artificial intelligence in digital content, particularly concerns about ownership, consent, and authenticity. As AI tools become more widespread, similar disputes are increasingly surfacing, blurring the line between creative inspiration and infringement.
