The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of failing to address the growing wave of insecurity across the state, following recent cases of kidnappings, killings and violent attacks.
In a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, said the security situation in Oyo had become worse compared to other South-West states.
The opposition party blamed the development on what it described as Governor Makinde’s “lip service, unhealthy politicking and showmanship” in handling security matters.
According to the APC, the governor has repeatedly shifted responsibility to the Federal Government instead of taking decisive action as the state’s chief security officer.
The criticism comes days after gunmen abducted teachers and students during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, including Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Esiele.
Governor Makinde had earlier described the incident as a painful period for both himself and the state, while again calling for the creation of state police to strengthen security at the grassroots level.
However, the APC said the governor’s latest position on state policing was contradictory, claiming he had previously dismissed the idea as a waste of time.
The party also questioned the effectiveness of the state’s security investments, including the purchase of surveillance aircraft reportedly worth billions of naira.
“We have said repeatedly that window dressing and populism cannot sustain any meaningful security architecture,” the statement said.
The APC further alleged that members of the Oyo Amotekun Corps were poorly treated despite their role in supporting security operations across the state.
The party urged Governor Makinde to focus on practical solutions and ensure the safe rescue of all abducted victims.
