The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has formally invited Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to join the ruling party, signalling growing momentum around his possible defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The invitation was disclosed on Tuesday by the Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, who said the move was made under the guidance of the party’s immediate past national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Abbas described the outreach as part of broader efforts aimed at political reconciliation, unity and the collective interest of Kano State, noting that the APC is open to welcoming the governor should he decide to switch allegiance.
“The APC is ready to receive Governor Abba Yusuf with open arms so that, together, we can combine our strengths for the progress and prosperity of Kano State,” Abbas said.
Speculation over Yusuf’s planned defection has deepened divisions within the NNPP, the platform on which he was elected. The development has reportedly strained relations within the party, particularly with its national leader and Yusuf’s political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is said to oppose the governor’s move to the APC.
Abbas added that, upon a formal defection, Yusuf and other NNPP members would be received into the APC under Ganduje’s leadership in what he described as an atmosphere of mutual respect and shared responsibility.
Political observers see the development as a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Kano remaining one of Nigeria’s most strategic political states.
