Peter Obi Demands Action on Nigerian’s Insecurity

The wave of insecurity sweeping through Nigeria has reached alarming proportions, with no end in sight. This is the grim assessment of Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State. Who has added his voice to the growing chorus of concern over the country’s deteriorating security situation.

In a recent post on his X handle, Obi expressed his sadness and frustration over the relentless attacks on innocent Nigerians. noting that the situation has been exacerbated by the economic hardship facing the country. “It is very saddening and heartbreaking that the wave of insecurity has continued to sweep through every part of the country with no end in sight,” he lamented.

THE INSECURITY ON THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMY

Obi cited the recent killing of 30 persons by terrorists in separate attacks on communities in two Local Government Areas of Benue State. As well as the terror attack on the motorcycle showroom of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing in Nnewi, Anambra State, where three members of staff were kidnapped.

The former governor questioned the direction of the country. Given the level of insecurity, and expressed concern over the impact on the economy. “Where are we headed as a nation with this level of insecurity?” he asked. “It is even more worrisome and discouraging that, in the face of the severe economic hardship facing our nation.

“our productive business facilities are attacked.”

Obi emphasized the need for urgent action to address the insecurity. Noting that the country cannot continue to allow the mindless waste of human lives and attacks on businesses and critical infrastructure. “We must end this monster of insecurity before we are all consumed,” he warned.

The former governor commiserated with the victims of the terror attacks and their families. And urged the security agents to do their best in rescuing the kidnapped workers. He also sympathized with Chief Chukwuma over the attack on his business facility.

Obi’s concerns over insecurity are not new. In a previous interview, he had emphasized the need for sustainable investment in agriculture to overcome food insecurity. And he also had outlined his plans to address the security situation in the country.

As the country grapples with the challenges of insecurity. It is clear that urgent action is needed to address the situation. The call by Peter Obi for an end to the monster of insecurity is a timely reminder of the need for collective action to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.

THE WAY FORWARD

To address the insecurity situation in Nigeria, the following steps need to be taken:

  1. Improve Economic Opportunities: The government needs to create jobs and improve economic opportunities to reduce poverty and inequality, which are drivers of insecurity.
  2. Strengthen Security Agencies: The security agencies need to be strengthened and equipped with modern technology to enable them to effectively combat insecurity.
  3. Promote Community Policing: Community policing should be promoted to enable communities to take ownership of their security and work with security agencies to prevent crimes.
  4. Address Root Causes: The root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment, need to be addressed through sustainable development programs.

“He strongly believes that the time to act is now, and if elected President, he would ensure that the economy works and more people are pulled out of poverty, thereby reducing criminality.

Obi’s solution to insecurity would be decisive and immediate, involving sustainable investment in agriculture, proper manpower, and standard equipment, He added.

By taking these steps, Nigeria can begin to address the insecurity situation and create a safer and more secure environment for all citizens.
