The Nigerian Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (NSNMMI) has taken steps to strengthen collaboration with the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) as part of efforts to improve cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research across Nigeria.

The initiative was highlighted during a courtesy visit by the President of NSNMMI, Professor Chizindu A. Alikor, who also serves as the Chief Medical Director of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. He led a delegation to meet with the Director-General of NICRAT, Professor Usman Malami Aliyu, in Abuja.

During the meeting, the delegation presented a strategic partnership proposal focused on expanding access to advanced cancer care and boosting research capacity nationwide. The proposed framework outlines five key areas of cooperation aimed at strengthening the country’s response to cancer through innovation, improved healthcare delivery, and scientific research.

One of the major priorities discussed was increasing access to modern nuclear medicine services, including PET/CT scans, SPECT/CT imaging, and radionuclide therapy. The plan seeks to make these specialised diagnostic and treatment services available across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, ensuring more patients can benefit from early diagnosis and advanced cancer treatment.

The discussions also explored opportunities to enhance collaborative research, develop local expertise, promote innovation, and improve the availability of quality cancer care. Both organisations agreed that closer cooperation would contribute to better prevention strategies, earlier detection of cancer, more effective treatment, and improved patient outcomes.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Alikor stressed that strategic partnerships are essential to transforming cancer care in Nigeria. He said collaboration between key health institutions would help expand access to cutting-edge diagnostic technologies and treatment options while supporting the country’s long-term cancer control goals.
