Military authorities in Nigeria have raised alarm over moves by the new terrorist organisation, Lukarawa to recruit new members in order to strengthen its operations in Nigeria’s Northern region.
The criminal group, which operates solely in Sokoto and Kebbi states, is believed to have infiltrated these areas from the Niger Republic and Mali, following the recent coup in Niger.
NewsBand reported last week that the Defence Headquarters during press briefing by Major General Edward Buba in Abuja, confirmed the group’s presence.
Buba, the Director of Media Operations at the DHQ, explained that the terrorists were engaging in recruitment through sermons, welfare packages, and the exploitation of social media platforms to attract young people to their cause.
The group’s most recent attack occurred on Friday in Mera town, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where at least 15 people were slaughtered and over 100 cows were stolen as residents were preparing for Jumaat prayers.
Though, the DHQ has assured that the military is closely monitoring the situation, collaborating with other sister security agencies and state governments to prevent further recruitment and to curb the group’s growing influence in the region.
Buba said, “The group is employing social media platforms, showcasing sermons and enticing recruits with welfare packages.
“Nevertheless, we know of these plans and are working together with other security forces and the state government to thwart the efforts of the terrorist.”
