EKET, AKWA IBOM STATE – The Nigerian Army has expressed concern over the low number of youths from Eket Local Government Area enlisting into military service.
A delegation from the Army Headquarters, led by Brigadier General Moses Ikobah, raised the issue during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Eket LGA, Tommey Akaninyene.
The Army official emphasized the importance of increased youth participation in military recruitment, describing it as vital for national security and balanced regional representation.
He noted that the Nigerian military provides career opportunities, skills development, and a platform for national service.
Brigadier General Moses Ikobah urged local authorities to encourage young people in the area to consider military careers.
He stressed that improved enrolment from Eket would ensure that the region is adequately represented within the armed forces.
The Chairman, Tommey Akaninyene, acknowledged the concern and assured the delegation of efforts to mobilize youths for recruitment.
He highlighted the need for awareness campaigns to educate young people on the benefits and opportunities available in military service.
Observers say low enrolment in some regions may be influenced by factors such as lack of awareness, fear of security risks, or preference for alternative career paths.
They note that economic conditions and access to education also play roles in shaping career decisions among young people.
Analysts emphasize that broad-based participation in national institutions like the military promotes unity and inclusiveness.
They argue that equitable representation across regions strengthens national cohesion and fosters a sense of belonging.
The Nigerian Army has continued to advocate for increased recruitment as part of efforts to strengthen its manpower and operational capacity.
Experts say targeted outreach and community engagement will be critical in addressing the enrolment gap in areas like Eket.
They conclude that collaboration between military authorities and local governments can help improve participation and ensure a more representative armed force.
