A tragic attack occurred on Tuesday in Egboro, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, as suspected bandits targeted a mining company reportedly owned by a Chinese national.
During the assault, Corporal Salisu Shamaki, a police officer providing security at the site, was killed.
Local sources reported that the criminal elements arrived in large numbers, creating panic among workers and nearby residents.
The late officer was said to have been assigned to guard the Chinese miner operating the facility, though the expatriate had not visited the site in three months.
Two security guards working at the site were reportedly abducted, and their whereabouts remained unknown as of Wednesday night.
A resident disclosed that the officer was killed in the Gbuaji settlement while guarding the site, and his remains were later taken to Patigi for burial.
While confirming the incident in a telephone interview, Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, stated that the attack occurred in Patigi, not Ifelodun, as earlier reported.
He clarified that no police officers were abducted during the raid.
“At Egboro, Patigi Local Government Area, a police officer was killed at a Chinese company, and two guards working at the facility were abducted. Properties within the company were also vandalized,” he said.
The commissioner added: “Contrary to reports, the police officers who were allegedly abducted are currently with me and have provided a briefing on the incident.”
