At least 17 people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack by armed bandits on Dangulbi community in Sokoto State, northwestern Nigeria, in a fresh assault that has once again highlighted the worsening security situation in rural parts of the country.
The attack, which occurred after suspected armed men invaded the community in large numbers, also left several shops looted and properties destroyed as residents fled in panic to escape the sudden onslaught. Eyewitness accounts described the incident as swift, coordinated and highly destructive, with little or no warning before the attackers struck.
Residents said the assailants stormed the community during daytime hours and immediately opened fire indiscriminately, causing widespread panic. People reportedly ran in different directions in an attempt to escape the gunfire, but many were caught in the chaos and killed before they could find safety.
According to local sources, the attackers moved through different parts of the community during the raid, targeting residents, traders and passersby. Several shops were broken into and looted, with goods and valuables carted away before the gunmen eventually withdrew from the area.
One resident who survived the attack described the scene as terrifying, explaining that the sound of gunshots forced people to abandon their homes and businesses. He said the attackers appeared well organised and operated without resistance for a period long enough to inflict significant damage before leaving the community.
Community leaders confirmed that among the 17 people killed were farmers, traders and other residents who were either going about their daily activities or attempting to flee the violence. Some victims have been identified by family members, while others remain unidentified as search efforts continue.
The attack has left many families in mourning, with several households thrown into confusion as relatives remain missing. Residents say the community is still in shock, with many too afraid to return to their homes or reopen their businesses following the deadly invasion.
Security agencies had yet to issue a detailed official statement at the time of filing this report, but local authorities have acknowledged the incident and promised to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. Meanwhile, calls for urgent government intervention have intensified.
The Dangulbi attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents attributed to armed groups commonly referred to as bandits operating across parts of northwestern Nigeria. These groups have been responsible for repeated assaults on rural communities, often involving killings, kidnappings and large scale looting.
In recent years, Sokoto State and neighbouring regions have experienced a steady rise in rural insecurity, with isolated communities frequently targeted due to limited security presence and difficult terrain that complicates rapid response operations.
Residents say the repeated nature of these attacks has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, forcing some families to abandon their homes entirely and relocate to safer areas. Many others continue to live in constant anxiety, unsure of when the next attack may occur.
Local leaders have urged both state and federal authorities to strengthen security deployment in vulnerable communities and improve intelligence gathering mechanisms to prevent future attacks. They also called for increased patrols and permanent security presence in areas identified as high risk.
There have also been renewed calls for humanitarian support for victims and displaced families, many of whom are now struggling to cope with the aftermath of the violence. Some residents have lost loved ones, while others have seen their sources of livelihood destroyed.
The Sokoto State government is expected to respond officially as investigations continue. However, residents insist that statements alone are no longer enough, calling instead for concrete and sustained security action to protect lives and property.
Security analysts note that the recurring pattern of attacks in the northwest reflects broader challenges facing Nigeria’s internal security architecture, particularly in rural regions where armed groups exploit weak surveillance and limited rapid response capacity.
They argue that addressing the crisis will require a combination of military action, community engagement and improved intelligence coordination among security agencies. Without such measures, they warn, rural communities will remain vulnerable to repeated attacks.
As the Dangulbi community buries its dead and attempts to recover from the latest tragedy, the sense of grief is matched by growing frustration over the continued cycle of violence affecting many parts of Sokoto State and the wider northwest.
For now, residents remain on edge, with many calling for immediate reinforcement of security personnel and long term solutions that will restore peace and allow them to return to normal life.
The attack serves as another grim reminder of the human cost of insecurity in Nigeria’s rural areas, where communities continue to bear the brunt of armed violence with devastating consequences..
