Two members of a local vigilante group have been killed in a fresh attack on Ta-Hoss community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in the area.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. on Wednesday while the victims were carrying out a routine patrol within the community.
The deceased, identified as 48-year-old Davou Dalyop Patu and 38-year-old Dalyop Zaram, were part of a vigilante team tasked with helping secure the area against criminal attacks.
Residents said the gunmen struck unexpectedly, killing the two men and leaving the community gripped by fear and uncertainty. The identities of the attackers have yet to be established.
A community leader, Livinus Badung, confirmed the incident, describing the victims as dedicated volunteers who played a key role in protecting lives and property in Ta-Hoss.
According to him, their deaths have left a painful void in the community, which is still struggling to come to terms with the latest violence.
“The community is deeply saddened by this loss. These men sacrificed their time and energy to help keep everyone safe,” he said.
Also reacting to the attack, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and extended condolences to the families of the victims and residents of the community.
Tengwong called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect rural communities and ensure those behind the attack are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
The latest incident adds to growing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where several communities have continued to face sporadic attacks despite ongoing efforts to restore peace. :
