Barcelona have reportedly added Sporting CP striker Luis Suárez to their list of attacking targets as the Catalan club prepare for the possibility of missing out on their preferred target, Julián Álvarez.
The Colombian forward has emerged as a potential alternative as Barcelona continue their efforts to strengthen their attack ahead of the new season. Atlético Madrid have remained reluctant to sell Álvarez, forcing Barça to explore other options in the transfer market.
Suárez’s name has now entered the conversation as Barcelona assess the striker market. However, a move for the Sporting forward is not expected to be straightforward, particularly because of his importance to the Portuguese champions and the long term contract he signed after joining the club in 2025.
Barcelona’s interest comes as the club’s pursuit of Álvarez continues to encounter resistance. The Argentine striker has been heavily linked with a move to Camp Nou, but Atlético have repeatedly made it clear that they do not want to lose one of their most important attacking players.
Recent reports indicate that Barça have continued discussions surrounding Álvarez, but Atlético’s position remains a major obstacle. The Madrid club have reportedly rejected significant offers and remain determined to keep the forward.

Luis Suárez is an intriguing candidate because the 28 year old has developed into one of the most productive strikers in Portuguese football. The Colombian is not to be confused with Barcelona legend Luis Suárez, the Uruguayan forward who enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Camp Nou.
Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, on December 2, 1997, Luis Javier Suárez Charris began his football journey with Leones in his homeland before moving to Europe at a young age.
His career took him through several clubs, including Real Valladolid, Gimnàstic, Real Zaragoza, Granada, Marseille and Almería, where he eventually established himself as a prolific goalscorer.
His breakthrough in Spain came particularly strongly during his time with Almería. In the 2024/25 season, Suárez scored 31 goals and provided eight assists, performances that attracted the attention of Sporting CP.
Sporting eventually completed his signing in July 2025, handing him a contract running until 2030. The Portuguese club also included an €80 million release clause in his contract, underlining how highly they valued the Colombian striker.
His first season in Portugal further strengthened his reputation.
Suárez enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign with Sporting, scoring 28 goals and providing six assists in the Portuguese league, according to statistical data. His performances made him one of the most dangerous attacking players in the division.
His influence was not limited to domestic football either. Suárez also made his mark in the UEFA Champions League, including scoring twice in Sporting’s memorable 2 1 victory over Paris Saint Germain during the 2025/26 campaign.
Those performances have also helped establish him as an important player for the Colombian national team.
Suárez represented Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and started the team’s round of 16 encounter against Switzerland. He also provided an assist in Colombia’s 1 0 victory over Ghana during the tournament.
The striker’s profile could make him an attractive option for Barcelona.
He is a natural centre forward who combines physical strength with movement inside the penalty area. His finishing ability and experience in Spanish football could also make him easier to adapt to La Liga than some alternatives from other leagues.
