Bayern Munich delivered a commanding performance to defeat Magdeburg 6-1 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, with Michael Olise scoring twice and providing an assist as the German giants booked their place in the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal.
Despite facing a determined Magdeburg side that briefly threatened to make the contest uncomfortable, Bayern’s attacking quality eventually proved overwhelming. The hosts scored twice in the first half before producing four more goals after the interval to complete an emphatic victory.
The match also featured a spectacular first-half response from the visitors, an important penalty early in the second half, several saves from Magdeburg goalkeeper Dominik Reimann and a late goal from teenager David Santos Daiber.
Bayern started on the front foot and created an opportunity through Olise, who tested the visitors’ defence during the opening exchanges. The French winger continued to find space in dangerous areas as the hosts sought an early breakthrough.
Their pressure paid off in the 10th minute when Ismael Saibari played a through ball into the path of Lennart Karl, who helped create the opening for Olise. Saibari collected the ball in an advanced position and squared it across the penalty area, allowing Olise to finish into an unguarded net with his left foot.
The goal gave Bayern a deserved 1-0 lead, but Magdeburg responded with impressive determination rather than allowing the hosts to settle into the contest.
In the 15th minute, the visitors equalised through Mateusz Żukowski after Felipe Chávez supplied an incisive pass on the counterattack. Żukowski carried the ball forward, cut inside from the left and unleashed a right-footed shot that beat Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
The equaliser briefly silenced the home crowd and demonstrated that Magdeburg could punish Bayern when given space to attack.
Bayern responded by increasing their attacking intensity, with Tom Bischof seeing an effort saved and Saibari continuing to trouble the visitors’ defensive line.
The hosts regained the lead in the 21st minute through Saibari, who finished a clever attacking move initiated by Olise. The Frenchman released his teammate with an incisive pass, and Saibari controlled the ball superbly before lifting it over the advancing Reimann with a composed right-footed finish.
The goal restored Bayern’s advantage at 2-1 and highlighted the growing understanding between Olise and Saibari, whose combination repeatedly caused problems for Magdeburg.
Bayern continued to search for a third goal before half-time, but Magdeburg remained dangerous on the counterattack. Karl missed an opportunity to extend the lead, while Chávez tested Urbig with a left-footed effort in stoppage time.
Magdeburg came particularly close to drawing level again when Barış Atik struck the post with a right-footed effort in the closing moments of the first half. The woodwork came to Bayern’s rescue, allowing the hosts to preserve their narrow advantage as the teams headed into the break with the score at 2-1.
Bayern returned for the second half determined to put the tie beyond their opponents, and the introduction of Alphonso Davies immediately added pace and attacking threat down the left flank.
The Canadian defender was instrumental in Bayern’s third goal, winning a penalty after being brought down inside the box by Pierre Nadjombe.
Olise stepped forward to take responsibility from the spot in the 50th minute. Rather than driving the ball into a corner, he calmly chipped the penalty down the middle, sending Reimann diving away from the ball to make it 3-1.
The goal gave Bayern valuable breathing space and forced Magdeburg to chase the game, creating more opportunities for the hosts to exploit spaces in the visitors’ defence.
Magdeburg attempted to respond through Emmanuel Iyoha, but his effort failed to find the target. Bayern goalkeeper Urbig was also called upon to deal with the visitors’ attacking efforts as the match became increasingly open.
Reimann kept Magdeburg in the contest with important saves, denying efforts from Tom Bischof and Karl as Bayern searched for a fourth goal. However, the visitors struggled to contain the sustained pressure.
Bayern finally extended their advantage in the 70th minute when Davies scored after a well-constructed attacking move involving Karl. The young attacker supplied the ball into a dangerous area, allowing Davies to finish with his left foot and make it 4-1.
Three minutes later, Davies turned provider as Bayern struck again. The defender delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Nathaniel Brown finished from close range in the 73rd minute to increase the lead to 5-1.
The two quick goals effectively ended Magdeburg’s hopes of mounting a comeback, with Bayern demonstrating the depth and quality that have made them formidable opponents in domestic competition.
As the match entered its closing stages, Bayern continued to create opportunities. Magdeburg’s defensive line was increasingly stretched, while the hosts remained eager to add another goal despite having already established a commanding advantage.
Bayern’s substitutions provided fresh energy, and their sixth goal arrived deep into stoppage time.
In the 90+3rd minute, Josip Stanišić supplied a pass to substitute David Santos Daiber, who finished with a right-footed strike into the bottom corner to register his first goal for the club and complete the 6-1 victory.
The late strike provided a fitting conclusion to Bayern’s dominant second-half display and confirmed their progression to the DFB-Pokal round of 16.
Olise was one of the outstanding performers, contributing two goals and an assist, while Saibari played a decisive role in Bayern’s attacking combinations. Davies also made a major impact after coming on at half-time, scoring once and providing the assist for Brown’s goal.
For Magdeburg, Żukowski’s equaliser and Atik’s effort against the post demonstrated that the visitors had moments when they could threaten the German champions. However, Bayern’s superior finishing and sustained attacking pressure eventually made the difference.
The match also carried a wider significance for Bayern, who rested newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane and still managed to score six goals. With head coach Vincent Kompany recovering from a recent health scare, assistant coach Aaron Danks led the team from the touchline.
Bayern will now turn their attention to Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund, while Magdeburg must regroup after a difficult evening in Munich.
The final score told the story of Bayern’s attacking superiority, but the match itself was more competitive than the result initially suggested. Magdeburg threatened to level the contest before the interval, only for Bayern to take control after the break and secure their place in the next round in emphatic fashion.
