The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), a week after issuing a safety alert to the public, has confirmed that the product by Beiersdorf multinational company, NIVEA Black & White Roll-On produced in Nigeria is safe for public use.

According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the agency in a recent statement stated that its investigation revealed that the Black and White Nivea Roll-on deodorant manufactured in Nigeria has no prohibited substance.

Earlier development

The agency had earlier on October 30, issued a public warning against using the NIVEA Black & White Invisible Body Deodorant, manufactured by Beiersdorf, a German multinational company.

NAFDAC initially warned that the NIVEA Black & White Roll-On deodorant contained BMHCA, a chemical prohibited in cosmetic products due to potential harm to reproductive health and skin irritation.

The agency after further investigation has confirmed that the product manufactured in Nigeria doesn’t contain BMHCA, making it safe for consumers.

In March 2022, the European Union (EU) officially prohibited the use of 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (Lilial, BMHCA) in cosmetic products due to concerns over its potential harm to human health and the environment.

According to NAFDAC, the warning was issued following a recall by European authorities, that the product contains the prohibited chemical BMHCA, posing potential health risks.

The recalled Nivea product according to the European authorities contains a hazardous chemical called 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA), also known as Lilial.

The chemical was banned in cosmetics due to its potential harm to human health, particularly the reproductive system, and its ability to impair the health of an unborn child.

New development

In the recent notification of NAFDAC on the product, it was revealed that the products manufactured in Nigeria does not contain any prohibited chemical.

NAFDAC in the notification stated that “a recent investigation reveals that the Black and White Nivea Roll-on deodorant manufactured in Nigeria does not contain the non-compliant ingredient (BMHCA).”

NAFDAC referenced Beiersdorf’s statement, which clarified that the contested Nivea deodorant batch, number 93529610, was never marketed or recalled in Nigeria.

Beiersdorf assured customers that this specific batch was not distributed in the country, emphasizing their role as the legal manufacturer of the Nivea brand.

Manufacturer’s response

Beiersdorf, the manufacturer of NIVEA products, in a statement has clarified that the recalled products have been out of circulation since 2022, meaning they’re no longer available in Nigeria or anywhere else globally.

“In fact, the batch in question had already expired in January 2022 in compliant with European cosmetic regulations at the time,” Beiersdorf stated.
