The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo has called on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained Director of Radio Biafra and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB].

The Ohaneze made the call when it rose from its Imeobi meeting in Enugu on Sunday.

However, representatives of Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra [MASSOB] and IPOB were visibly absent from the meeting.

MASSOB and IPOB spokespersons, Uche Madu and Emmanuel Powerful had earlier stated that they won’t meet with any group until Kanu is released.

In a communique read by former Health minister, Prof. ABC Nwosu, the body expressed optimism that his release will quell the current Biafra agitations raging through Southeast and Southsouth states.

Ohanaeze also urged government to treat Kanu’s matter as a political issue rather than a security matter and condemned attempts to drag the situation and public expression of Ndigbo over their exclusion from the Nigerian nation into the realm of partisan politics.

The statement condemned public protests and argued that all actions and activities which threatens the security and harmonious co-existence of all Nigerians, wherever they may be domiciled, is dangerous, which must not be encouraged.

The Imeobi, which is the highest policy organ of Ohanaeze, expressed desire that dialogue replaces public protests and called for immediate creation of an ad hoc national platform.

This, according to them, would address immediate causes that have triggered the present public protests, revisit and address latent and longstanding issues, which threaten the evolution of Nigeria into a modern and united nation.
