The British Police on Friday April 4, 2025 charged comedian Russell Brand with rape and sexual assault after an 18-months criminal investigation.

According to media reports, the incidents happened in Bournemouth and Westminster, London.

The investigation began after four women accused Brand of sexual offences between 1999 and 2005.

London’s Metropolitan Police force said Brand, 50, faces one count of rape, indecent assault, oral rape and two sexual assault.

London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed the 50-year-old comedian faces court on May 2, 2025.

Brand has denied the allegations, claiming he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.

Police said they are still investigating and asked others with useful information to speak out.

In September 2023, Channel 4 and Sunday Times published detailed allegations from the four unnamed women.

Brand said in a video on Friday that he would defend himself in court.

“I am now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

“I have never engaged in non-consensual activity. I’ll prove my innocence in court,” he added.

British prosecutors said they reviewed evidence thoroughly before deciding to charge Brand.

Jaswant Narwal from the Crown Prosecution Service said the charges followed the Channel 4 documentary.

She reminded the public that Brand has the right to a fair trial.

The BBC earlier apologised for not addressing complaints against Brand during his time as a presenter.

Brand worked with the BBC between 2006 and 2008 on several radio and short-term projects.

The BBC admitted that some presenters abused their celebrity status in the past.

Brand, once popular for his wild comedy and movie roles, has shifted focus to online content.

He now shares videos blending wellness advice and conspiracy theories on social media.

Brand moved to the United States in recent years and rarely appears in mainstream media.

The UK authorities say the trial will proceed with full legal process and public scrutiny.
