The Borno State Government has Imposed a ban on Street Hawking and Illegal Activities in Maiduguri.

In a statement issued on Friday, the General Manager of the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board, Limán Mustapha, announced the enforcement of a ban on street hawking and various illegal activities in Maiduguri.

The decision, he said, was in line with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.

Mustapha explained that the board has specifically prohibited street hawking, the operations of tricycle operators, and generator mechanics around key areas in the city, including the Post Office and Monday Market locations. The ban also extends to other activities that disrupt the flow of traffic and public spaces, including the use of pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts for unauthorized activities.

The new regulations also target the sale of engine oil on road reservations, the dumping of sand or building materials, the mixing of cement on roads, and the construction of boreholes along roadways. Mustapha emphasized that these activities, which compromise the safety, cleanliness, and organization of the city, will no longer be tolerated.

He stated that individuals affected by the ban have been instructed to vacate their occupied spaces immediately. “The board has no choice but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law,” Mustapha added, stressing that the measure is aimed at ensuring a clean, safe, and organized urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State.

The General Manager also called on residents and business owners to comply with the new regulations to avoid legal consequences. The government’s primary goal, he stated, is to restore order and improve the living conditions within the city, and the cooperation of the public is essential for the success of the ban.
