A high-powered delegation from the Labour Party, led by presidential candidate Peter Obi, visited Maiduguri on Tuesday to condole with the government and people over the recent devastating floods that have ravaged the state.

The delegation, which included Senator Nenadi Usman, National Chairman of the party’s caretaker committee, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmad, Obi’s running mate in the 2023 polls, and other party leaders, donated N50 million to the state’s emergency relief fund to support victims of the disaster.

During their visit, the team met with Governor Babagana Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi, and traders at the Bank of the North spare parts market who lost goods to the flood. They also visited an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Government College, where they met thousands of people affected by the floods, and a woman who tragically lost her newborn twins to the disaster.

Obi assured the people of Borno that the Labour Party is committed to supporting those affected by the floods, pledging to provide more aid and resources for rebuilding and recovery.

“We will continue to stand with the people of Borno, providing aid and resources to help them rebuild and recover from this tragedy,” Obi said. “As the people of Borno navigate this challenging time, we want them to know they are not alone. We are dedicated to helping alleviate the suffering and hardship caused by the floods.”

The Labour Party delegation’s visit and donation come as the state struggles to cope with the aftermath of the floods, which have submerged over half of Maiduguri and displaced thousands of residents.
