BREAKING: Atiku Officially Resigns from PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of political affiliation.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, Atiku informed the PDP ward chairman in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, of his decision to leave the party immediately.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated.
The former Vice President, who served from 1999 to 2007, expressed deep emotional regret in his letter.
He described the PDP as the political family he helped establish and twice represented as a presidential candidate.
Atiku declared, “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”
However, he said the PDP had strayed far from the principles upon which it was founded.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he explained.
He described the decision as heartbreaking but necessary, citing irreconcilable differences between himself and the party leadership.
Atiku emphasized that the PDP no longer represents the ideals he once fought to uphold. He expressed concerns about the party’s current direction and loss of vision.
Despite his decision to resign, Atiku expressed gratitude to the PDP for years of support.
“I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the future,” he wrote. “Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”
The letter was officially received and stamped by the PDP Jada 1 Ward office on July 14. A representative identified as Hamman Jada Abubakar acknowledged the receipt.
Atiku’s resignation marks a significant shift in the political landscape, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It comes amid rising internal tensions and growing speculation about possible realignments within opposition parties.
Political analyst believe Atiku’s next political move could influence the fate of key players in the opposition space. For now, he has not disclosed his future plans or whether he will align with another party or movement.
However, the exit of a founding father like Atiku is a strong signal that the PDP may face deeper fractures in the months ahead.
