A U.S. federal court has sentenced former Congressman George Santos to 87 months in prison for fraud and identity theft.

The court delivered the sentence on Thursday, wrapping up a case that gripped American politics with scandal and deception.

Santos, who represented parts of New York in Congress, was convicted of multiple counts including wire fraud, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors said Santos orchestrated a broad scheme to defraud donors, mislead the public, and misuse campaign funds.

The Department of Justice revealed that Santos used stolen identities to charge thousands of dollars on donors’ credit cards.

He also submitted false campaign reports and used political donations for personal expenses, including luxury goods and spa treatments.

During sentencing, the judge described Santos’ actions as “calculated and persistent,” emphasizing the breach of public trust.

Santos, who remained silent during most of the proceedings, offered a brief apology before sentencing.

“I made terrible mistakes and I take full responsibility,” he said.

“I ask for mercy and the chance to start again someday.”

The case against Santos began in 2023 when inconsistencies in his resume and background sparked investigations.

Federal authorities soon uncovered a web of deception spanning campaign finance violations and financial fraud.

Santos was arrested in 2024 and later expelled from Congress—the first expulsion without a criminal conviction in over 20 years.

Following his sentencing, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reiterated its commitment to holding public officials accountable.

“No one is above the law,” the statement read. “Public service must not be used for personal gain.”

Santos’ legal team said they plan to appeal the sentence, arguing that some evidence was mishandled.

He will serve his sentence in a federal correctional facility to be determined by the Bureau of Prisons.

He has also been ordered to pay restitution and forfeit any illegal gains from his fraudulent activities.

The sentence marks a dramatic fall from grace for a once-promising political figure now defined by scandal.
