Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has thrown his weight behind Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He made this declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed Nigeria’s political outlook and his expectations for the next general election.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Farotimi emphasized the importance of a free, fair, and credible election in 2027, calling for transparency and true voter participation.
Farotimi stated that his vote will go to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, if elections were held today.
He noted that unless a superior candidate emerges before the polls, he remains committed to supporting Obi.
According to him, “If elections are held today, where our votes will count, I will vote for Peter Gregory Obi unless somebody comes into the race that I think can do better.”
He further stressed that if the political lineup remains unchanged from the last election, he would still cast his vote for Obi.
Farotimi urged Obi to be more assertive in presenting his policy ideas and political strategy as 2027 approaches.
He said, “I will hope that he is a little bolder with his policy platforms, but frankly speaking, in terms of capacity and integrity, there is nobody else I will be supporting.”
He described Obi as a candidate with rare qualities of leadership, integrity, and competence.
Farotimi also revealed that his support for Obi could change only if the former governor aligns himself with certain political figures he disapproves of.
“It might be that he teamed up with some of my objectionable persons that I cannot be able to stomach, and that is a real possibility,” he said.
He ruled out any possibility of voting for other well-known politicians like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Outside of that, there’s nobody else. Am I going to Bulaba or Atiku?” he asked pointedly.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, emerged as a strong contender in the 2023 presidential election through his message of accountability and reform.
Although he did not win the presidency, his campaign significantly mobilized Nigerian youth and energized discussions on governance.
Obi focused his campaign on restructuring, anti-corruption, and responsible governance, themes that continue to resonate with activists and reform-minded citizens.
Farotimi’s endorsement is part of a growing chorus of voices demanding better leadership and political accountability.
His comments come at a time when Nigerians are increasingly disillusioned with traditional political structures and are searching for credible alternatives.
He maintained that only drastic changes in Obi’s political behavior or alliances would force him to reconsider his stance.
Farotimi has been a consistent advocate for social justice, good governance, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
His unwavering commitment to these values informs his support for Peter Obi.
The 2027 presidential election is expected to be a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
With voices like Farotimi’s gaining prominence, the demand for credible leadership is growing louder.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) will continue monitoring developments leading to the 2027 election.
Many Nigerians believe that the future of the country depends on choosing leaders who are honest, capable, and people-centered.
As political activities gradually resume, Peter Obi’s next moves may determine whether he retains the momentum built in 2023.
The coming years will reveal whether Nigeria’s electorate is ready to shift decisively toward reform and accountability.
Farotimi’s bold declaration has added fuel to ongoing debates about the direction of the nation’s politics.
With less than two years until the polls, the stakes are rising for both candidates and voters.
