BREAKING: Flying Eagles snatch late winner against Saudi Arabia, World Cup hopes alive

(DDM) – Nigeria’s Flying Eagles reignited their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Saudi Arabia in their Group F clash in Chile.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the game, played under tense conditions, kept fans on edge until the final whistle, with a 94th-minute penalty deciding the outcome.

Salihu Nasiru gave Nigeria a bright start when he opened the scoring in the 10th minute, latching onto a through ball to slot past the Saudi goalkeeper.

However, the joy was short-lived as Saudi Arabia equalized midway through the first half, exploiting defensive lapses in Nigeria’s backline.

The Flying Eagles regained control before halftime when Amos Ochoche restored the lead with a powerful strike that rattled the Saudi net.

Nigeria’s momentum seemed strong, but just minutes into the second half, Talal Haji struck for Saudi Arabia to level the scoreline again, silencing the Nigerian supporters.

With both teams chasing a crucial victory to stay alive in the tournament, the match became an end-to-end battle. Chances came for both sides, but poor finishing and resilient defending kept the scoreline locked at 2–2 as the clock ticked towards stoppage time.

Drama unfolded in the dying minutes when Nigeria won a penalty after a Saudi defender handled the ball inside the box. Captain Daniel Bameyi stepped up under immense pressure and converted coolly in the 94th minute, sealing the thrilling 3–2 win for the Flying Eagles.

The result lifted Nigeria to third place in Group F with three points, while Colombia and Norway currently lead with four points each. Saudi Arabia, with no points from two matches, remain bottom and face elimination.

Nigeria’s final group game against Colombia has now become decisive. A victory would guarantee qualification for the knockout stages, while a draw or loss could leave the Flying Eagles’ fate dependent on results elsewhere.

The Flying Eagles, two-time runners-up at the U-20 World Cup (1989 in Saudi Arabia and 2005 in the Netherlands), have long been regarded as one of Africa’s most promising youth sides.

However, inconsistency has plagued recent campaigns, with Nigeria failing to go beyond the Round of 16 in the last edition.

Coach Ladan Bosso has faced criticism over his tactical approach, but the late win over Saudi Arabia has restored belief among fans that Nigeria can still make a deep run in Chile.

As the team prepares to face Colombia, supporters back home are hopeful that the Flying Eagles will find the resilience needed to advance, with dreams of finally lifting the elusive U-20 World Cup trophy still alive.
