French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will formally recognize the State of Palestine in September 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the declaration will be made during Macron’s address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

This move positions France among the most influential Western powers to support Palestinian statehood amid intensifying calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Macron made the announcement through his official account on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

He emphasized that France remains committed to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

According to Macron, the most urgent priority now is to end the war in Gaza and protect the civilian population from further harm.

He repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted access for humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages, and the disarmament of Hamas.

Macron stated that recognizing a Palestinian state is not only about diplomacy, but also about establishing lasting peace and mutual security in the region.

“We must build the state of Palestine, ensure its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the Middle East,” he posted.

“There is no alternative,” the French leader insisted, signaling a clear policy direction ahead of the UN gathering.

The announcement comes amid a deadly and protracted conflict in Gaza, where Israel’s military operations and Hamas rocket attacks have devastated civilian life.

International observers have increasingly urged major powers to take firmer steps toward a two-state solution, citing worsening humanitarian conditions and the failure of existing peace initiatives.

Macron’s initiative has drawn praise from Palestinian leaders and could influence other EU member states considering similar recognitions.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed that the French consul in Jerusalem has already delivered an official letter to the Palestinian Authority.

That letter, sent on behalf of President Macron, stated France’s intention to recognize Palestine formally.

Barrot is expected to confirm this commitment again at the United Nations on Monday.

Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh also took to X to express gratitude for the letter addressed to PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

The gesture was warmly welcomed by the Palestinian leadership, which views international recognition as key to advancing Palestinian rights and statehood.

France’s planned recognition follows a growing wave of diplomatic moves from countries around the world supporting Palestinian sovereignty.

Earlier in 2024, several European countries, including Ireland, Spain, and Norway, formally recognized the State of Palestine, prompting discussions across EU capitals.

France’s involvement significantly raises the stakes, given its political weight as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Analysts say Macron’s decision could influence US and UK policymakers, especially amid growing pressure from human rights organizations and Arab states.

However, the move is likely to provoke strong opposition from Israel, which maintains that unilateral recognitions of Palestine undermine negotiations and reward terrorism.

The Israeli government has consistently insisted that Palestinian statehood must result only from direct negotiations and mutual agreements.

Macron’s statement, though firm, also highlighted the need for a demilitarized Palestine that coexists peacefully with Israel.

This framing appears designed to balance France’s support for Palestinian rights with its commitment to Israeli security.

France has long advocated a two-state solution but has hesitated to recognize Palestine unilaterally, until now.

With this announcement, Macron’s administration signals a turning point in French foreign policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The formal recognition of Palestine by a major Western power like France may also reinvigorate dormant peace efforts globally.

As the war in Gaza continues to escalate, Macron’s decision could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Middle East diplomacy.

World leaders are expected to closely watch France’s speech at the UN General Assembly in September.

If successful, the move could trigger a domino effect in diplomatic circles, reshaping international consensus around Palestinian statehood.

Macron’s initiative highlights a broader shift in global attitudes as the humanitarian toll of the Gaza conflict becomes increasingly unbearable.

For now, the spotlight turns to September, when France will officially present its historic decision to the global community.
