Lawyers under the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma regions of Imo State have suspended court activities following the brutal murder of one of their colleagues, Chinedu Nwowu.
The killing, which occurred on Wednesday evening in Mgbidi, has sparked outrage and fear across the state.
Reports form diaspora digital media (DDM) indicate that Nwowu, a well-known lawyer, was ambushed and shot by unidentified gunmen in his hometown.
Sources revealed that the assailants intercepted his vehicle and opened fire, killing him instantly.
The motive for this heinous act remains unclear, leaving the legal community and residents in shock.
In response to the tragic incident, the Orlu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to which the deceased belonged, declared an immediate suspension of court proceedings in the affected areas.
The NBA announced an emergency meeting to address the situation and chart a way forward for its members.
A statement released by Chukwuemeka Okoro, a representative of the Orlu Branch of the NBA, confirmed the meeting would take place at the High Court in Mgbidi.
The statement emphasized the importance of the gathering and reiterated the decision to suspend court activities.
“Following the gruesome murder of one of us, CHINEDU NWOWU, last night in his hometown, Mgbidi, all lawyers in the Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby notified of a crucial emergency meeting this morning by 10 am at the High Court, Mgbidi.
The High Courts in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma will not sit today.
Please, be punctual,” the statement read.
Speaking to reporters, the Chairman of the NBA Orlu Branch, Ben Amukamara, expressed the association’s grief over the incident.
He stated that the legal community in Imo State is deeply troubled by the growing insecurity, which has now claimed the life of one of their own.
As of the time of this report, the Imo State Police Command is yet to provide any updates on the murder or the efforts being made to apprehend the perpetrators.
The NBA has called for swift justice and increased security to ensure the safety of its members.
The incident has further heightened tensions in Imo State, with residents and professionals alike calling for an end to the violence plaguing the region.
